Do You Agree that
Selecting the Right Credit Counselor
is Vital to Your
Debt Management Plan?
Dear Friends,
Do you agree that regardless of your particular need, selecting the right credit counselor is vital? Often you will find that
once you realized and accepted that you need help and you need a counselor. You start realizing how difficult it is to select the right
counselor. As always we are there for to help facilitate your thoughts by providing you all the right information.
What a Credit Counselor does?
Credit counselors will review your current situation and collaborate with you to determine the best possible financial
strategies. They will also do the following:
-
Advise you in managing your money
-
Offer solutions to your current financial problems
-
Develop a personalized plan to help you prevent future difficulties
So you are saying that you know all of this and now you need helpful tips so that you can decide your credit counselor. OK, here
are the tips for selecting the right credit counselor.
-
Some organizations claim they can "fix" a bad credit report or credit score. Others say they can settle a consumer's debts for
relatively little money. If the promises sound too good to be true, they probably are. Reliable credit counselors help people
manage their money better and, if appropriate, can set up a realistic repayment plan that is acceptable to creditors.
-
Offers a free initial consultation to discuss your financial situation including debts and assets thoroughly.
-
Make sure counseling sessions are substantive. The length of a counseling session will vary from agency to agency, but you need
to make sure the counselor takes enough time to really understand your personal
situation.
-
Does the agency provide a full range of services, or is it just trying to push a profitable Debt Management Plan? You should
seek out an agency that provides a full range of services and tailors plans to your personal circumstances.
-
Has staff with specialty training in credit, debt, budgeting, bankruptcy, etc.
-
Make sure the agency will work with all of your creditors. Before entering a DMP, you should make sure the agency will work with
all of your creditors. Some agencies may refuse to work with creditors unless the creditor agrees to a certain level of
financial support for the agency.
-
When presenting a debt management plan, does not pressure you to take it as the primary solution.
-
Is conscientious about distributing payments to creditors and giving you a means to track this payment.
Once you've narrowed your search down to one or two agencies, it's a good idea to check them out with one or more of the
following to see if complaints have been filed against them: your state Attorney General's office, local consumer protection agency, and Better
Business Bureau.
After you've spoken to a representative of the credit counseling agency, you'll have to decide whether to use the agency's
services or go it alone. Credit counseling agencies really can't do anything for you that you couldn't do for yourself, theoretically at least.
You could attempt to negotiate with your creditors to lower interest rates, extend loan terms to catch up on late payments or make your payments
more manageable, or remove late fees. In reality, the average person will probably not be as effective at doing this as a credit
counselor.
Be honest with yourself. if a lack of spending discipline is what got you into the pickle you're in, you may not
have the discipline to pay down your debt without the help of a credit counselor. If you decide to go this route, make sure not to enter into a
debt repayment plan that requires a higher monthly payment than you can realistically handle.
